Overview
The pedestrian improvements to SR 9 at the Chattahoochee River are a key element of Roswell and Sandy Springs' efforts to revitalize the SR 9 corridor and to promote and enhance recreational and multimodal use of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The goals of this project are to improve safety and operations, and increase multimodal connectivity.A Public Hearing Open House (PHOH) is a required step in the environmental process for the project to comply with the 1969 National Environmental Policy Act. The purpose of the PHOH is to allow for comment, and when completed allows for use of federal funding. Any comments received during the PHOH will become part of the project record and included in the final decision document by Federal Highway Administration.
In keeping with Governor Brian Kemp's directive to keep government agencies and municipalities functioning as Georgia combats the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Roswell conducted a virtual open house instead of a PHOH by placing project information for review and feedback on this webpage to comply with social distancing and avoiding crowds of 10+ people. The comments received during the virtual open house are available below.
This project was originally funded with a Federal earmark ($3 million) and local funds from both cities. Because Federal money is involved, this project must continue to follow the Federal environmental guidelines as well as coordinate with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Although Roswell is the official sponsor of the project, Sandy Springs has agreed to share the local match 50/50 with Roswell.
The Elected Officials from both cities have chosen a Prestressed Arch Beam type for the bridge, to be located on the eastern side of existing SR 9 bridge over the Chattahoochee River.
The project is currently in preliminary engineering and working through the environmental (NEPA) process. If additional funding is identified it is anticipated construction could possibly begin as early as 2022.
